Venice has often enjoyed a reputation for being a "rip off" place to eat out. I think the reputation is undesired, and actually, I do not enjoy eating out in any city more than in Venice. The fish is fresh. The cuisine is rich in traditional, invented the fusion style being naturally a bridge between West and East. A large number of highly rated restaurants have sprang up in Venice recently. I attach a list of my favourite places, organised by type and price range, including also Icecream shops.
AT MY HOME'S DOORSTEP AND FAMILY FRIENDLY:
Osteria Bandiera is very convenient and friendly, and it is very close to my house. Suitable for children, they will look after my guests.
FAMILY FRIENDLY:
I love going to the terrace of Punto Zero in the Lido of Venezia. Easy to reach from home (direct transfer with 14, or several other water buses). I love the terrace by the sea and the view.
I quite enjoy the family run Pensione Wildner. It is part of the "slow food presidium", it offers high quality ingredients sourced locally. Ask of the owner, Nico, a friend of my family.
The restaurant Ai Nevodi is cheerful, comfortable for families and offers Venetian cuisine in Via Garibaldi, a very populous and busy street in Venice near the Giardini.
My grandfather used to be a regular client of Trattoria alla Madonna. It is a simple Venetian Trattoria, by the Rialto bridge. It is busy, but the dishes are very typical Venetian.
Families might enjoy Rossopomodoro near St. Mark. It is the only Pizzeria in venice with a brick oven and it is easy with children.
ELEGANT:
Linea d' Ombra, near the zattere, servers very fresh Venetian cuisine in a scenic setting with excellent views of the lagoon. The cooking is refined.
Il Covino, near home, offers a smwww.dacelestepellestrina.comall intimate atmosphere, with very few tables and the chief working in front of you in a very narrow space.
La Corte Sconta offers excellent cuisine in a typical local trattoria atmosphere, and it is close to home.
GOURMET HIGH END RESTAURANTS
Glam is Venice's best restaurant with two Michelin stars. It blends Venetian cuisine with Asian fusion. It boasts one of the few gardens on the Grand Canal. I would go there for a special occasion.
Local is located close to my home. It is family run, and it serves locally sources ingredients. It has earned a Michelin star.
Zanze offers very fresh fish and it is very typically Venetian, close to the railways station. It has the setting of an osteria, but, in fact, it offers good fusion dishes blending Venetian cuisine with Asian influences.
EXPERIENCES:
Hostaria Certosa offers excellent Venetian cuisine in an island near home, just in front of the island of S. Elena. You can go there with public transport, the restaurant will offer complimentary private transfer on the way back, easy to reach from home, and a nice experience.
Are you looking for an unusual experience in a unique setting? Then visit the Fly restaurant at the Airport Nicelli at the Lido. The fish is excellent and the small, ar deco airport, dating back from the 30s, enchanting and surreal. Go there at lunch and book a table outside to enjoy the show. Children are allowed to run around. The airport is one of Venice's most beautiful places
Da Celeste at Pellestrina, can go there with a bicycle which you can rent at the Lido. You can carry out a similar itinerary in a chaper place, Ittifico le Valli.
Paradiso Perduto, offers life music shows, just check their schedule before booking.
ICE-CREAM:
Geleteria da Nico is in the Zattere area. It is south facing and it has a terrace facing la Giudecca. Order their specialty, the Gianduiotto.
My favourite ice-cream in Venice is da Suso, near the Rialto bridge.
I love walking in the summer to the ice-cream shop in Via Garibaldi.
In the summer visit Campo Santa margherita and sit outside in one of the local gelaterie.
PLACES FOR A DRINK:
I enjoy visiting the bar of T fondaco late at night, it is a former spike market turned into a department store. The bar is magnificent, and it is open until midnight (check before going) and you can access it through an entrance on the side.
Some people enjoy the piano bar at Danieli restaurant. Hotel Metropole has an elegant bar (outdoors in the summer). The Baur hotel often hosts jazz events.
LOCAL FOOD SHOPPING:
From Tuesday to Saturday buy fish, retables, meat and cheese at Rialto. The fish is extremely fresh and, actually, very good value.
By Fresh Pasta at Pastificio Serenissima.
I buy pastries from Pasticceria Chiusso.
YOU can find three supermarkets near home. PUnto Simply in San Lorenzo. Coop in Via Garibaldi. An a discount, called Prix.
